Polymarket leaderboard: how to read it, and why copy trading is harder than it looks

The Polymarket leaderboard ranks traders by profit and volume. What those numbers really say about skill, how to study a top trader’s profile, and the traps in copying them.

The Polymarket leaderboard ranks traders on the global Polymarket site by profit and by volume over different periods, typically the last day, week, month and all time. Because Polymarket runs on a public blockchain, every name on it links to a profile with that trader's positions and history.

It is one of the most visited pages on Polymarket, and one of the most misread. Here is how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

What the Polymarket leaderboard shows

  • Profit (P&L): how much a trader has made or lost over the period. This is the ranking most people care about.
  • Volume: the dollar value a trader bought and sold. Big numbers here usually mean market makers and high-frequency traders, not great forecasters.
  • Time window: day, week, month or all time. Short windows reward whoever caught one big move; the all-time list rewards size and staying power.
  • Profiles: click a name to see open positions, past trades and results by market. Traders appear under a username or a wallet address.

The exact layout changes from time to time, but those are the building blocks. The leaderboard covers the global site; accounts on Polymarket US, the regulated US exchange, are not public wallets.

Volume is not skill

The volume ranking is dominated by market makers, traders who post buy and sell orders all day and earn the spread (and, on Polymarket, maker rebates). They can trade hundreds of millions of dollars a month while taking little directional risk. High volume tells you someone is active, not that they are right.

Profit is concentrated, and noisy

Profit rankings are closer to what you want, but treat them with care:

  • One bet can make a career. The famous example is the trader known as the "French whale", who made tens of millions of dollars on Donald Trump's 2024 win with a handful of huge positions. That was a single, very concentrated view, not a repeatable edge you can copy.
  • Survivorship. You see the winners of the period. Thousands of traders who took similar risks and lost are not on the list.
  • Unrealised gains. Part of a trader's P&L can be open positions marked at today's price. If the market turns, the profit shrinks.
  • Hedges you cannot see. A trader may hold the opposite position on Kalshi or elsewhere. Their Polymarket profile then shows only half the trade.

Academic work on Polymarket data finds that profits are heavily concentrated in a small share of accounts and that month-to-month performance is only modestly persistent.

How to study a top trader's profile

If you want to learn from the leaderboard, look past the headline number:

  1. How many markets? Steady profit across many markets says more than one giant win.
  2. Which categories? Some traders are consistently good at one thing (elections, sports, crypto) and average elsewhere.
  3. Entry prices. Buying at 30¢ something that resolves at $1 is a forecast. Buying at 97¢ and collecting 3¢ is a different, riskier strategy than it looks.
  4. Timing. Did they trade before the news or after it?
  5. Losses. Look at the worst trades. Every real track record has them.

Why copy trading is harder than it looks

Copying a top wallet sounds simple. In practice:

  • You are late. You see a trade after it happens, and on thin markets the whale's own buying has already moved the price. You pay more for the same position.
  • Different exits. They may sell before you notice. Copying entries without exits loses money quickly.
  • Different sizing. A position that is 1% of a whale's bankroll might be 30% of yours.
  • Third-party copy bots. Tools that copy wallets automatically usually need access to your funds or keys. Some are legitimate; many are scams. Never share a private key.

A better use of the leaderboard is as a research list: find traders who are good in a category you follow, read their positions as one more signal, and make your own decision.

Other ways to track what smart money is doing

  • Our Trends page shows the biggest price swings, favourites that changed and markets suddenly drawing volume across Polymarket and Kalshi.
  • Polymarket's public data API exposes trades and positions if you want to build your own tracking: see Kalshi API and Polymarket API.
  • Price gaps between platforms are often a sign that one side has moved first: see prediction market arbitrage.

Polymarket leaderboard: frequently asked questions

How does the Polymarket leaderboard work?
It ranks traders on the global site by profit or by volume over a chosen period, and links each name to a public profile with positions and trade history.

Who is the top trader on Polymarket?
It changes every week and depends on the window you choose. The all-time list is dominated by traders who made very large, concentrated bets on major elections.

Can you copy trade on Polymarket?
Polymarket has no built-in copy trading. You can follow wallets manually, but delays, price impact and different position sizes make results very different from the original trader's.

Is there a Kalshi leaderboard?
Kalshi accounts are not public blockchain wallets, so there is no equivalent open record of every trader's positions.
