This article covers who founded and runs Polymarket, who has invested, what it is worth and what to make of "Polymarket stock" and "Polymarket token" searches.

Who founded Polymarket?

Coplan launched Polymarket in June 2020, at 21, after leaving New York University. The idea was a market where anyone could trade on the outcome of news events, settled in USDC, a dollar stablecoin, on the Polygon blockchain. It grew quickly through the 2020 and 2024 US elections; in 2024 its election markets became a reference that newspapers and TV quoted next to the polls.

The road was not smooth. In 2022 Polymarket settled with the CFTC for running an unregistered market and blocked US users. In November 2024 the FBI searched Coplan's apartment as part of a federal investigation; in July 2025 the Justice Department and the CFTC closed their cases without charges. The same month Polymarket bought QCEX, a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearinghouse, for $112 million, which became the base for Polymarket US. Details in is Polymarket legal in the US.

In October 2025, after ICE's investment, Bloomberg named Coplan the youngest self-made billionaire on its index.

Who are Polymarket's investors?

  • ICE (Intercontinental Exchange). Agreed in October 2025 to invest up to $2 billion at an $8 billion pre-money valuation, and added $600 million in March 2026. ICE is a large minority shareholder and distributes Polymarket's market data to financial institutions. It does not run the company.
  • Founders Fund, Peter Thiel's firm, led Polymarket's 2024 Series B, alongside Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and other venture investors.
  • 1789 Capital, the firm where Donald Trump Jr. is a partner, invested in 2025, and Trump Jr. joined Polymarket's advisory board. That makes him an adviser, not an owner. (He also advises Kalshi; see who owns Kalshi.)

How much is Polymarket worth?

ICE's deal valued Polymarket at roughly $9 billion after the money came in. Through 2026, reports described new fundraising at $15 billion and later above $20 billion; none of those later figures had been confirmed by the company when we checked.

Where does the money come from? For years Polymarket charged almost no fees. It now charges taker fees on most categories of its global site and runs its own fee schedule on Polymarket US. How that works, and how it compares to Kalshi, is in how does Polymarket work and make money and Polymarket fees vs Kalshi fees.

Is Polymarket publicly traded? Can you buy Polymarket stock?

No. There is no Polymarket stock price because the shares do not trade on any exchange, and no IPO has been filed. Buying ICE stock gives you a small, indirect slice of ICE's stake, but ICE is a far larger company whose results depend mostly on its exchanges and mortgage technology.

Accredited investors sometimes find private Polymarket shares on secondary marketplaces, with the usual caveats: thin supply, private pricing and transfer restrictions.

Is there a Polymarket token or airdrop?

Polymarket executives have talked publicly since late 2025 about a possible token and airdrop, and Coplan discussed an on-chain asset again at an industry conference in October 2026. But no token has launched, and there is no official date, name or eligibility rule. Anything sold as "Polymarket token" today is not from Polymarket; be careful with links promising an airdrop claim.
